How prepared are you and your family for an Earthquake? Recent events in Haiti and Mexico should serve as a reminder to everyone that Earthquake Preparedness begins at home. The cities of Westlake Village and Agoura Hills have teamed up to host ?Are You Prepared??, an event aimed to inform local citizens about steps they can take before, during, and after an earthquake to better protect their homes and families.
?Are You Prepared?? will be held on Tuesday, August 31 at the Westlake Village Civic Center, located at 31200 Oak Crest Drive in Westlake Village, beginning at 5:00 pm. The event will begin with information booths in the Civic Center courtyard. Several agencies and organizations will be available to help answer questions, including: Westlake Village Disaster Response Team (WLVDRT), Agoura Hills CERT team, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Lost Hills Sheriff?s Station Search and Rescue Team, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, Las Virgenes Unified School District, and Agoura Animal Shelter. SOS Survival Products, an emergency equipment supplier, will be on hand to showcase disaster preparedness equipment and kits. Safety Orange, an emergency food supplier, will hand out samples of their emergency food products.
Along with the displays in the Civic Center Courtyard, a short seminar and question and answer period will take place in the City Council Chambers. The seminar will begin at 6:30 pm and will also be shown live on WVTV Channel 10. A representative from the Los Angeles County Fire Department will begin with a presentation on Emergency Preparedness followed by a question and answer period with representatives from each agency.
Sign ups will be available that evening for an upcoming Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class. The CERT program provides training in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The upcoming CERT class modules will begin on September 7 in Agoura Hills. The CERT classes are free to the public. Additional information on the CERT training class modules will be available at the event.
