Tomorrow, Sun May 15th, is the 5th Annual Soap Box Derby. 10am-2pm, Farmers Insurance Building Parking Lot, Opposite City of Westlake Village City Hall and Library, 31051 Agoura Road, Westlake Village — and the event has everything from Soap Box races to a NASCAR display, Car Show, Healthy Kids Day, Music, Community BBQ, Rock Wall, Obstacle Course, and Sheriff and Fire Dept displays.

This year’s Soap Box Derby event includes Big Sunday, and is a chance for Westlake Village and surrounding area residents an easy to give back to the community and help those in need.

Over the past couple of weeks, Big Sunday volunteers have been collecting food and clothing at several local schools, including Calabasas and Agoura High Schools, Alice C. Stelle Middle School, and Lindero Canyon Middle School. At Soap Box, volunteers will be unloading many of the collected items from a truck at the event site, sorting them into areas by food type, then boxing them and labeling them so the Rescate Family Rescue Center can put them in their storage unit and pull them out as they are needed. When everything is sorted, it will all get loaded back onto the truck to go to Rescate.

There will also be a “craft” project going on to benefit FreeArts.org (check out their website). This group provides art programs for abused children and kids who area awaiting determination hearings at the L.A. County Courthouse. They have asked us to cut out paper crowns that kids can decorate, as well as cutting out images and words from magazines that can be used for collages. They’ve asked us to cut these out so they don’t have to carry around stacks of magazines. They’ve asked us to get lots of variety, including some ethnic magazines if we can.

So if you can, wrangle up some magazines and bring them on the 15th.

If you have any food or clothing items that you’d like to donate (or collect from others), please bring those with you as well. Here’s what Rescate has requested:

– Food (non-perishable items)
– Clothing of any type
– Shoes of any type
– School supplies (including back packs)
– Baby items (e.g., diapers, sealed baby food or formula, wipes, toys)
– Cooking/kitchen items (bowls, pots, plates, silverware, etc…)

Again, Big Sunday will be held in conjunction with the Triunfo YMCA’s Soapbox Derby, Car Show, BBQ, Obstacle Course, DJ, NASCAR Exhibit, Rock Wall, Healthy Kids Day and more. So there will be lots of other fun things going on. Come do some work and have fun as well!

Bring any of your donations to the event. If you have a large amount, please contact Dave Moorman so that we can arrange for an easier drop off.
