Kindergarten “Age” But Not Kindergarten “Ready”?
Las Virgenes Unified School District Announces a New
Journeys-A First Step Kindergarten Program
At White Oak Elementary School in Westlake Village

Children begin their school careers when they enter the magical world of Kindergarten. However, with the increasingly academic demands of kindergarten, some parents are questioning their children’s developmental readiness for the traditional Kindergarten program. This is why LVUSD created Journeys – A First Step Kindergarten Program, designed for (but not limited to) students who turn five between July and December 2 and may not be socially or academically ready for “regular” Kindergarten, although they are age-eligible. Having 2 successful Journeys’ at Sumac and Lupin Hill Elementary Schools we are looking forward to adding a Journeys class at White Oak Elementary School in Westlake Village for the 2010-2011 school year.

There is significant research that supports the importance of ensuring a child’s readiness for school. Journeys, although aligned to California Content Standards, will present curriculum in a sheltered, developmental way, at a pace that meets the students’ individual needs. Following a year in the Journeys program, most students will enter a traditional Kindergarten program, although some may be ready to move on to 1st grade.

For more information on the White Oak Journeys program, please contact the White Oak Elementary School Office at 818-889-1450. To make reservations for the Kindergarten Orientation scheduled for Thursday, April 15 at 8:30 am, please call the White Oak office. We look forward to adding this successful program to the White Oak campus.
