This morning’s tiny earthquake

Normally, we don’t send out information on really small earthquakes, but since there’s been so many questions this morning, here’s the info. There was a *tiny* earthquake this morning in Thousand Oaks.

According the USGS-Caltech Seismic Net, the magnitude 2.5 earthquake took place at 5:29am today (November 28, 2010) 2 miles “ESE of Thousand Oaks.” Specifically, 34.160N 118.805W which is just about the county line, and the border of the LA and Ventura County sides of Westlake Village, just E of Westlake High School.

Remember, magnitude for earthquakes is logarithmic. In other words, a magnitude 3 is 10x larger than a magnitude 2. So, a magnitude 2.5 is very small and was likely only felt by people in Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village because of the close proximity.
